My 3 1/2 year old has finally been staying dry all day and has been sleeping in underwear just fine with no accidents. He has had several mornings where he has woken up with a dry diaper. He likes to wake up slow so it's hard to convince him to go to the bathroom right away in the morning. I think he is staying dry at night and then wetting his diaper when he is first waking up in the morning. How do you make the switch to wearing underwear at night?
My son (2 1/2) has been day trained for almost a year now. He went through a phase a couple weeks ago where he was waking up dry in the mornings in his diaper so we switched to underwear. He made it a few nights but then when I'd check on him in and he'd be soaked and sleeping through it! We went back to diapers for now. I read that it's not uncommon (especially in boys) to be day-trained for a year or more and still wear diapers at night. Night dryness isn't as much about "training", it's about having a big enough bladder to "hold it" all night, and a strong enough sensation to wake yourself up before you have an accident. I would say that if he has been staying dry, try it and he may be ready. If it doesn't seem to be happening and you are ending up frustrated about changing the sheets every day, go back to diapers and try again in a month or two. Also, I stopped using the pricey diapers and just use the store brand ones because when my son goes, it's usually just a little pee and nothing too extreme that I need all that costly protection for! I don't mind continuing to pay $6 a month for a pack of cheap diapers instead of changing the sheets at 2 am every night! Good luck!
Yea, I'd rather change diapers than sheets as well. I haven't been pushing him yet. He's been taking naps wearing underwear so I figure he can get used to that first.
