I am new to the group. I am a preschool teacher and have been teaching for over 30 yrs. I teach 3s-4yr. I have been teaching that age for sometime. At that age , they understand more, they are just learning to cut, small motor skills are developing. As a teacher you can plan alot of fun learning activities.
Iam 51 yrs old and the children keep me young and active.
All you young teachers starting out there ,will love the early childhood field. I`m still having fun [ only now with some aches and pains:(]

I just write to tell people of the wonderful experiences you can have if you divert away from the norm a little and what great benefits it can bring! I had a prestigious job in a solicitor’s office yet it bored me – I was with the same people every day and though the job was very interesting, the working conditions were not and I felt neither interested nor challenged. So I did something completely out of the ordinary. I left my job and took an año sabatico travelling through Spain. Though not exactly far from England, it is far enough to be able to notice a difference in culture and this excited me greatly. I loved being able to integrate with the local people and having learnt Spanish at university, I was able to communicate reasonably well. I loved the Spanish culture so much that I took on a little job out there which allowed me to meet local people – teaching English as a foreign language. Doing this I was able to put my Spanish to use but also help others wanting to learn English. The classes I gave were private and I have even kept in contact with some of my students – many want to come to England to do a curso ingles extranjero and I have told them I would be delighted to play the host family – help them learn English in the evenings after their formal classes. I am back in England at the moment but planning my next trip already – back to Spain I think, briefly to the Andalucia region where I will see all the friends I made (and the gatitos persas who I shared my apartment with!) but then to the North – I hear cities such as Salamanca have many students wanting to learn English and so this seems perfect for me. Anyone have any tips of other big university cities in Spain?

Now that my son is 2 I'm excited to have him help me! Last night in a magazine I saw a very good idea for all of the fun cookie decorations. They used a muffin tin and put a different decoration in each section of the muffin tin. I thought it was a great way to prevent an entire bottle of decorations from being poured on one cookie! It's a great way to ration the decorations. They had different candies and things in each tin. They also suggested giving each child their own muffin tin to prevent fighting. I may have to try that!

I'm just wondering if other parents have noticed their children acting much quieter at school than anywhere else, not just at home. My daughter goes to our city's most reputable learn through play concept preschool. The teacher is compassionate and enthusiastic and amazing with over 25 years of experience. She has said that this is her quietest group she's ever had. I was so surprised to see my typically vocal, carefree, friendly and even LOUD daughter barely speak a word. The teacher told me talks very little, but will answer if spoken to, as some of her classmates won't even do that.

She went to this same school last year but had a different teacher...someone with little patience for 3 yr. olds...I am wondering if the stern approach of last year's teacher has caused these kids to withdraw. Last year my daughter became more quiet and withdrawn as the year went on, but I was really hoping to see her old self back this year. She is chatty and outgoing and more social in all of her other activities...thoughts?

My other thought, besides last year's teacher having had an effect, is to agree with this year's teacher...that there are a lot of late birthdays, socially immature kids, and the entire class is following the lead of the shy, quiet ones, rather than the opposite.

Not sure why this is bugging me so much. My daughter says she likes school and hasn't once expressed a wish to stay home.

Also, we've had play dates here with several of her classmates and they starting talking, laughing, screaming the minute they see each other. Not sure why they don't talk or play at school...do kids this age feel self-conscious?

I heard an interesting interview on the radio this morning about living complaint-free. As a former chronic complainer, it got me thinking. Have I really changed? When I was pregnant with my first child, I realized what a sourpuss I was and vowed to turn my thoughts & words around. I did pretty well, but I can't necessarily claim to be complaint-free. After hearing the interview, I replayed the last few days in my head and tried to remember what I said when in earshot of my children. Did I say, "Yuck, this coffee is too strong," or "How nice of Daddy to make the coffee this morning?" I don't remember. But, I bet my children do. My 4-yr-old does a great job of not whining. That is, she doesn't use a whining voice. She does, however, constantly talk back or complain quite a bit. I can't tell you how tired I am of hearing, "But I don't want..." or "But I don't like..." I've always contributed that to her age - maybe I should pay more attention to what I say. Maybe she's just repeating what she hears me saying.

What do you think? Do preschoolers tend to whine or complain, or am I just setting a bad example? :P
